Golf

Next month we have our four day trip to Nelson Bay to look forward to.
The 2011 Awards Presentation and Lunch was held at The Point Restaurant, Killcare. Twenty five of us enjoyed the company, the meal and the presentations.
What made the day unique was for the first time we have a lady Club champion, Di and she was presented with her Trophy by our first lady Club President Rhoda.
Col received his prize for the best scratch score. Congratulations to both the winners!

November: Our Golf Group continues to be active with ladies from the Golf Clinic organised earlier in the year, who have now joined us in our Friday games. We look forward to them playing with us again and also any other Club members or friends in 2012. Remember you do not have to be a great golfer, just come and enjoy the outing and exercise, along with the Probus friendship and fellowship which prevails throughout.
The Club Championship, has reached a very interesting stage. After four rounds (of the five to be played), three strokes cover the first three with Colin on 103, Diane 105, and John 106. The fifth round could be a “cliffhanger”. So far there are three other players with three scores in, yours truly 110, George 111, and Roy 112. They have the job ahead of them!
October:
Congratulations to one of our “new” golfing ladies, Barbara, who has won her first ball prize since starting the game with our Ladies Learner group some months ago.
Of course the major topic of conversation among our golfers right now is the impending 2011 Club Championship. Commencing on Friday November 4 over five successive Fridays we will play a stroke round. Good luck to all the competitors.
August:
Our golfers are starting to respond to the improving playing conditions with player numbers slowly increasing. Nowhere is this more evident than with our ladies! Diane did not feel nearly as “unique” as she had Jan, Barbara and Bev to share coffee at the end of the round rather than the usual “beer with the blokes”. A warm welcome was extended to them all and to our visitor Steve.
The 2011 Club Championship is going to be held in November. From the five rounds (or as few as three) each player can select their three best rounds with the lowest net tally the winner. In addition we would like to run a ladies event, if we could get enough starters, how about it girls?
July:
The arrival of the drying high winds (and Gosford City Council opening the bar on Terrigal Lagoon) has brought about an extraordinary change in the playing conditions on Terrigal Golf Course. Because of this we had our biggest turnout for several weeks.
With the Annual Club Championship on the horizon our playing group is reviewing the format we will follow this year (where has the year gone?).
June:
Unfortunately there has been little else to talk about in our golfing world over the last few weeks other than weather! We have only managed one serious competition.
Bev, John and yours truly won a very close three ball ambrose competition against Di , Roy and George.
Sadly our Terrigal course is still very wet underfoot; hopefully it will dry out soon. In the meantime we look forward to the ladies who have recently successfully completed the “Golf Clinic” joining our weekly competitions.

May:
After the great flurry of activity leading up to the Blackheath Holiday and the golf on that wonderful golf course there, things have been very quiet at Terrigal. We had some appalling weather early in April and now our numbers are down with illness/injury and other diversions.
In the meantime our prospective lady members are enjoying their golf clinics with the local lady professional who is proving to be a good teacher. Keep it up ladies, we need more members.

March:
Blackheath - Bushwalk / Golf Holiday
For the golfers we had a seriously mixed bag. On the Tuesday afternoon there was brilliant sunshine to help us appreciate a most beautiful course at Blackheath. Lush fairways, magnificent trees with some showing the first traces of autumn and very true expansive greens should have brought out the best of us, but, playing a 2 ball better ball stableford competition only Diane and John could deliver. They had a wonderful round, but, the less said about the rest of the ten strong field the better.
However Thursday afternoon was different, very different. After intermittent sunshine in the morning following early morning mist we braved the course with more mist coming in intermittently, to play a 4 ball ambrose. But by the 12th a steady drizzle started to fall and by the time we were about as far from the Clubhouse as we could get this became rain and the temperature seemed to get even lower.
Much to everybody’s surprise our golf overall was much better on Thursday in these terrible conditions. The two 4 balls each ended up just 1 over par. Well done! We should also note two remarkable individual performances. On the 17th, our designated “nearest the pin” competition short hole, which we could barely see at all through the mist and rain, Jan hit her tee shot within a few metres of the pin. But on the 18th,, par 4, dripping wet with shivers and chattering teeth all round, John O. stepped on to the tee, barely able to hold the driver steady, and belted the ball out of sight dead centre over the hill down to the approach to the green – wow!
It was a great experience for us to play again on a really top class course, even with the weather on Thursday. All who participated will remember the course.

February:
The intense heat and very high humidity have made conditions over the last few weeks very trying - roll on Autumn!
Our annual Awards Lunch at Empire Bay Tavern was well attended and enjoyed by all. Our host was Golf Captain Mike, he and Club President David congratulated the winners
January:
Well here we are starting a New Year on the golf course.
We returned to our usual playing arrangements (start at 1.15 pm) and found the course in very good condition (other than the construction work on the 3rd.)
In a two ball aggregate match the righties challenged the southpaws in what proved to be a very keenly fought battle. The good guys came from behind to finally win the day with the standard of play very high. Typical was the short par 3 2nd hole where all four put their tee shots on the green, a very rare occurrence. (On two of the other par 3s we all missed the green)
