Bushwalking

Walks to look forward to:

We are now in recess for the summer months until March when Annette will be leading us for a walk around Pearl Beach including the Arboretum. More details later.

In April I will be leading a walk from Davistown Tidal Baths around the waterfront to the ferry stop and return. This is a nice flat walk with a water-front reserve all the way.

I am organising a Bushwalking and Golf 4 Day/3 night Holiday at Nelson Bay staying at the Landmark Hotel. If you are interested in joining us please let me know and we can give you a detailed itinerary with costs. The dates are: Monday 30 April to Thursday 3rd May 2012.

This year we have enjoyed:

November:

Forty five of us enjoyed our ‘Bush Picnic’ at MacMasters Beach.  The weather was perfect, the venue tops and the company great. Once again Richard’s catering was first class, thank you Richard!  It was a fitting end to another year of bushwalking.

October:

Twenty two of us enjoyed the great weather and walk along part of The Great North Walk.  The wild flowers were past their best but there were still plenty to see, also two goannas and a rabbit put in an appearance.

Ann and John led this walk and provided us with the history and a running commentary on the way.

Another most enjoyable day.

September:

Crackneck Lookout at Bateau Bay. We went through a maze of beautifully coloured wildflowers. This is a spectacular site and is well worth the effort.

August:

This walk was be led by Fred and took us along the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway. The walkway links Concord Hospital with Rhodes Station.

The 15th August is the anniversary of VP Day and there was a memorial service at the Walkway at 2 pm.  The speakers at the service commemorating the 66th anniversary of V.P. Day mainly reflected on the sacrifices and tragedy of war and the considerable contribution the wartime generation made to Australian Society.  There was also a New Guinean Fuzzy Wuzzy in attendance

The Walkway is a community project involving Concord Council, Concord Rotary, the RSL, Concord Hospital and the State Government.  It has more than 20 stations depicting the wartime campaign along the Kokoda Track and other areas of New Guinea.

July:

Twenty five members and Maxie our mascot enjoyed this very pleasant walk from Kincumber to Davistown. Gosford Council is to be commended on the construction of this excellent facility. Before we set out on the walk Bruce  kindly arrived to give everyone some history of the area, Dunlop Hill and the old homestead still owned by the Dunlop family. It was very kind of Bruce to make the trip over from Wagstaff to give us his talk.

We all had a great walk, some had a work out on the equipment in the park and then down to the serious business of lunch. This is what Probus is about.

June:

We had eighteen starters for our walk on Kincumba Mountain.  The walk was most enjoyable and the scenery from the lookouts was spectacular.

The wind strengthened about lunchtime and that proved to be a challenge to the Bar-B-Q chefs.

Another good day.

May:

This walk was be led by Michael and Heather. We walked along the waterfront from Ettalong to Umina. Eighteen members (and one dog) enjoyed the scenery, the weather, the company and of course lunch.

What a pleasant outing.

March / April:

Twenty two of us enjoyed our trip to Blackheath and the Blue Mountains. The first day we enjoyed the sights and some played golf.

The next day was our bus trip. Our first stop was Govetts Leap with its extensive views over the Grose Valley followed by a most interesting talk on Aboriginal Culture by our NPWS Guide complete with a walk showing us examples of native foods in the bush.  This was followed by a visit to Megalong Valley and an enjoyable lunch at the old Tea Rooms.

After lunch we travelled back up onto the escarpment to the spectacular Hargreaves Lookout at Shipley, overlooking the Kanimbla Valley. From there it was on to Mt York visiting the memorials to Blaxland, Wentworth, and Lawson epic journey over the Blue Mountains in 1813. The thought of travelling the steep descent down Cox’s road into Hartley Valley in the modes of travel of those days was somewhat frightening!

Our last visit of the day was Pulpit Rock with its exhilarating views.

The day ended with a very nice Italian meal in a nearby restaurant.

The following day there was a wide variety of activities from Mt Victoria to Wentworth Falls with the weather changing during the day to more typical mountain mist. A change from the earlier game for the golfers.

Friday saw us all making our way home with some visiting Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens on the Bells Line of Road.

The accommodation and cuisine were top class.  Michael and Heathers’ attention to detail over the four days left nothing to be desired.

March:

The weather was perfect, John and Barbara led 30 of us (plus 4 dogs) on a very pleasant walk beside the water at Hardys Bay. On the way we bumped into a fellow member, Bruce, who told us a little of the history of this area.  Afterwards we enjoyed lunch together under the trees. It was a great way to spend the morning.

  • The April bushwalk was combined with the three day golf trip to Gloucester.
